CC/CCPP and healthtesting
The dogs I own that I plan to use for breeding will have known results for the following:
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia '
- PLL (Primary Lens Luxation)
- CERFed clear
- PRA-PRCD (type of Progressive Retinal Atrophy)
Hips and elbows are x-rayed at a certified veterinarian. Not all veterinarians are cleard for sending x-rays to the Norwegian Kennel Club, so make sure that you do that. Not many breeders to this for CC/CCPP, but I choose to do so for several reasons. To my experience certain insurance companies won't cover expences related to diseases on hips and elbows unless the parents have official results from NKC. Also, I love both agility and freestyle/HTM and I want my dogs to be fit for this. For official results, you must also pay NKC for requisition forms for hip and elbow x-rays. It is possible, and also recommended, that you pay for these in advance, and bring them to the veterinarian who will take the x-rays.
For all genetic tests bloodwork is recommended, but cheek swabs are also possible. However NKC only recongizes results from bloodwork. It is possible, and also recommended, that you pay for these in advance, and bring them to the veterinarian who will take the tests. When you get the results, you simply post/email this along with the results. Scans are possible.
PRA-PRCD may get tested at Optigen in USA. Instructions and info are found at Optigen.com. An online form is available and makes it quite easy to get through this.
For PLL, you can order a test-kit from Animal Health Trust.
To get the CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation, eye-certification) contact a veterinarian and make sure they are certified to do this test.
